On August 28, IKEA will attempt to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the largest gathering of people in two-piece pajamas, kicking off a year-long campaign dedicated to improving sleep quality worldwide.
The event, set to take place in Älmhult, the birthplace of IKEA, is part of the company’s broader mission to promote better sleep for all. This initiative comes in response to widespread sleep challenges highlighted in the recent IKEA Life at Home Report.
According to the report, 55% of people consider sleep their most important well-being activity at home, yet nearly half of all adults report dissatisfaction with their sleep. Poor sleep has significant impacts on daily functioning, mood, work performance, and mental health, with disadvantaged groups being particularly affected.
“For decades, IKEA has been dedicated to understanding and improving how people sleep,” said Fredrika Inger, Managing Director of IKEA of Sweden. “As poor sleep quality continues to be a massive societal issue, we are intensifying our focus, using our expertise to create better sleep solutions that are sustainable, comfortable, and affordable.”
The world record attempt will also mark the beginning of IKEA’s year-long campaign centered around six key factors for better sleep: Comfort, Light, Sound, Temperature, Air, and Decluttering and Storage. Throughout the year, IKEA plans to conduct new research, provide practical advice on improving sleep, and introduce new products aimed at making quality sleep more accessible.
“We know many people struggle with living in small, shared spaces, which can make it difficult to create an ideal sleep environment,” Inger added. “Our goal is to help everyone create a comfortable and restful sleep environment, regardless of their living conditions.”
This event and the subsequent initiatives reflect IKEA’s belief that a good night’s sleep is essential for a better everyday life and should be within reach for everyone, the company says.
